Court Name: Small Claims Court or Cook County Pro-Se Court

Dollar Limit:: $5,000 (Small Claims); $1,500 (Cook County "Pro-se").

Where To Sue: Where defendant resides or injury occurred. Contracts Where performance expected.

Service: Certified or registered mail with return receipt (if defendant resides within county of suit), sheriff or court-approved adult.

Hearing Date: Between 14 and 40 days after summons issued.

Attorneys: Allowed, except in Cook County "Pro Se" branch; required for corporations.

Transfer: If claim or counterclaim is over $5000.

Appeals: By either side for review of law, not facts; to Appellate Court within 30 days.

Special Provisions: Jury trial available at request of either party. If jury trial is demanded in Cook County, "Pro se" case is transferred to Small Claims. Court may order installment payments. Court may order arbitration.
